Sometimes creating a taxonomy can seem abstract or removed from everyday usefulness, but in reality a taxonomy you create today in the SharePoint 2010 term store can have an immediate effect on being able to find information in your company's portal.

By creating a taxonomy of Job Skills and including topics that are relevant to what people do everyday at your company, and then integrating those into an employee's My Site, you can immediately connect those topics to people who are interested in them, or perhaps even experts in the field.

The first thing you need to do is create the taxonomy, then take a few moments to tag yourself with terms from the taxonomy in your My Site settings. Very simple. Once the tag is associated with your profile, your name with be included on the search results page and users can "find an expert" using search.
